The speed of the pan can be increased by repeatedly clicking on the arrow of direction of pan. The button between the arrows toggles to pause, and then resume the pan.

Alternatively, positioning the mouse pointer within the image will control
the speed and direction of pan.
Clicking anywhere within the image will pause the pan until the mouse pointer is moved into a different zone, whereupon its position will determine the panning behaviour.
